EL PASO, Texas — A 19-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle early Saturday on Loop 375 in El Paso, authorities said.
Andres Montanez of El Paso died after being hit by a silver Honda while crossing the eastbound lanes of Loop 375 near Mile Marker 20, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office said. Deputies responded to the crash at approximately 1:06 a.m. on May 30, 2026.
Montanez was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, officials said. Next of kin have been notified.
The preliminary investigation determined that the silver Honda was traveling eastbound when it struck Montanez, who was crossing the roadway, according to the sheriff's office. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
No charges have been announced. The investigation remains ongoing, authorities said.
The crash occurred near the Transmountain rest area that overlooks Northeast El Paso. Loop 375, also known as the Cesar Chavez Border Highway in parts of the city, is a major roadway connecting different sections of El Paso.
Pedestrian fatalities on high-speed roadways remain a concern in the region. According to data from the Texas Department of Transportation, pedestrian deaths in traffic crashes have been a persistent issue in urban areas across the state in recent years, though specific local figures for El Paso were not immediately available.
The sheriff's office did not release additional details about the circumstances, including whether speed, impairment or visibility conditions played a role. "The investigation is active and ongoing," officials stated.
Montanez's death marks the latest fatal pedestrian-vehicle collision reported in the El Paso area this year. Authorities routinely urge drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution on multi-lane highways, particularly during nighttime hours when visibility may be reduced.
The sheriff's office has not disclosed further information about the driver or the vehicle beyond its description as a silver Honda passenger car. Toxicology results and other investigative findings have not been released.
As of Sunday, no updates on potential traffic citations or criminal charges were available. Officials said additional information would be released as it becomes available.
