DETROIT—Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, Edison Research projected on Wednesday, defeating U.S. Representative Haley Stevens in one of the party's most closely watched nomination contests and setting up a November showdown with Republican Mike Rogers for a pivotal battleground seat.
El-Sayed, a former Michigan public health director and 2018 gubernatorial candidate, prevailed after a hard-fought race that highlighted ideological divisions within the Democratic Party. His victory came despite Stevens receiving backing from several prominent Democratic establishment figures and benefiting from substantial outside spending during the campaign.
The open Senate seat became available after Democratic Senator Gary Peters announced he would not seek another term. Democrats view retaining the Michigan seat as critical to their efforts to regain control of the Senate, while Republicans see the contest as a key opportunity to preserve their majority.
Mike Rogers, a former U.S. representative, secured the Republican nomination without opposition and will face El-Sayed in the Nov. 3 general election. The race is expected to rank among the nation's most competitive Senate contests.
The Democratic primary drew national attention because it pitted El-Sayed's progressive platform against Stevens' more centrist approach. During the campaign, El-Sayed won endorsements from progressive leaders including Senator Bernie Sanders, while Stevens attracted support from much of the party establishment. Outside groups spent heavily on the race, underscoring its national significance.
As vote counting neared completion, both Democratic candidates emphasized the importance of party unity heading into the general election. El-Sayed called for Democrats to unite behind the party's nominee against Rogers, while Stevens also urged supporters to focus on the November election.
