PHILADELPHIA — A fatal crash shut down a section of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia early Wednesday, authorities said, as emergency responders investigated the incident that left at least one person dead.
The crash occurred around 4 a.m. on northbound I-95 near the Center City area, involving multiple vehicles, Pennsylvania State Police reported. One driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while others sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals.
Details of the sequence of events remain unclear, police said. The highway section was closed for several hours as crews cleared wreckage and conducted an investigation, causing significant traffic delays in the region.
"Investigators are working to determine the cause," a state police spokesperson said. No further information on the identities of those involved has been released pending notification of families.
Interstate 95 is a major north-south corridor along the East Coast, and accidents in urban areas like Philadelphia frequently lead to extended closures due to high traffic volume and the need for thorough scene examinations. Similar incidents in recent months have highlighted ongoing safety concerns on the heavily traveled route.
Local officials urged motorists to seek alternate routes during the closure. Towing and cleanup operations continued into the morning rush hour.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation confirmed the shutdown affected several lanes and exits, with detours in place. No estimates were available on the number of vehicles involved beyond initial reports.
Police have not released information on whether speed, weather conditions or other factors contributed. The investigation remains active.
As of June 11, 2026, portions of the interstate have reopened, but some restrictions may linger as the probe continues. Authorities expect to provide additional updates later in the day.
