LOS ANGELES — Federal authorities served a search warrant at a Southern California aerospace facility where a chemical tank overheated last month, forcing the evacuation of about 50,000 residents, the FBI said.
FBI agents executed the warrant on Wednesday at GKN Aerospace Transparency Systems in Garden Grove, seizing documents and records related to the storage, use or disposal of methyl methacrylate, the chemical involved in the incident. The search followed an overheating event on May 21 that prompted evacuations in parts of Orange County.
The tank contained 6,000 to 7,000 gallons (about 22,700 to 26,500 liters) of the highly flammable chemical. Authorities feared a potential explosion or toxic release before the situation stabilized, allowing residents to return by late May.
