CLEVELAND — U.S. fighter jets did not intercept an aircraft over President Donald Trump’s Ohio event, according to available verified reporting, although the president’s visit to northeast Ohio prompted heightened airspace controls and flight restrictions.
Trump traveled to Ohio for the Patriot Games, a White House-backed youth athletics competition held at Spire Academy in Geneva. The president arrived at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport before traveling to the event, with local aviation operations affected by temporary restrictions associated with the presidential visit.
There is no verified report from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), the Federal Aviation Administration or other authoritative U.S. agencies indicating that fighter aircraft intercepted an unauthorized plane over Trump’s Ohio event.
The incident that appears to have prompted the claim occurred earlier this month in New Jersey, not Ohio. On Aug. 9, NORAD sent F-16 fighter jets to intercept two civilian general-aviation aircraft that entered restricted airspace near Trump’s golf club in Bedminster while he was staying there. The aircraft were escorted out of the restricted area, according to reports citing NORAD.
The Bedminster incident followed the imposition of temporary flight restrictions around Trump’s location, a standard security measure used during presidential movements. Authorities have not indicated that either aircraft posed a threat to Trump.
Similar airspace violations have occurred during Trump’s presidency. In March, NORAD said fighter jets intercepted a civilian aircraft that entered a temporary flight-restriction zone near Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The aircraft was escorted out of the restricted area, and NORAD said flares were used to attract the pilot’s attention.
Trump’s Ohio visit was linked to the inaugural Patriot Games, which brought teenagers from across the United States to Spire Academy for athletic competition as part of events marking the 250th anniversary of the United States. The competition was scheduled for Aug. 9-11, with Trump expected to attend the finale.
As of Wednesday, there was no verified evidence that an aircraft had been intercepted by fighter jets in connection with Trump’s Ohio appearance. The confirmed fighter-jet interception involving Trump in recent days took place in restricted airspace near Bedminster, New Jersey.
