WASHINGTON — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation on Monday authorizing the renaming of Palm Beach International Airport to the President Donald J. Trump International Airport, officials said.
The bill, passed by the state Legislature last month, designates the new name effective July 1, subject to approval by the Federal Aviation Administration. It also requires state government records, including maps, to reflect the new name once approved, according to the legislation.
Palm Beach International Airport, located about five miles from President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, serves as the main commercial airport for Palm Beach County. The measure was introduced as House Bill 919 and allows the state to preempt naming rights for major commercial airports in Florida.
Gov. DeSantis signed the bill into law on Monday. No immediate comment from the governor’s office or the White House was available on the signing.
The legislation follows a trademark application filed by Trump’s family business in February seeking to protect the use of the name for the airport. Eric Trump posted on social media that the airport was now officially being renamed, thanking state officials for their support.
The airport currently uses the code PBI. The bill provides for a potential change to the code DJT, reflecting the president’s initials, although that change also requires FAA approval.
Details on the cost of rebranding signs, systems and materials remained unclear. The measure requires a licensing agreement with Trump for use of his name at no cost.
As of Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration had not commented on the proposed name change or any timeline for review. The renaming process is expected to involve updates to official records, navigation systems and airport infrastructure if approved.
Further details on implementation steps or additional approvals were not immediately available.
