ARVADA, Colorado — A bystander intervened to stop an armed suspect during an incident in Olde Town Square here on Monday, preventing further harm after the individual opened fire in the public area, authorities said.
The confrontation unfolded in the busy downtown shopping and gathering space, where the suspect allegedly began shooting. The good Samaritan, whose identity has not been released, confronted and subdued the gunman, according to police. One officer and the suspect were among those killed in the exchange, while the bystander was also fatally shot by responding officers in what authorities described as a case of mistaken identity.
Arvada police said the incident began when the suspect ambushed an officer in the square. The bystander, armed with a legally carried firearm, engaged the gunman and stopped the threat before being shot by another responding officer who arrived on scene.
"The quick action of the individual who intervened likely prevented additional casualties in a crowded public space," Arvada Police Chief John Jackson said in a statement. Details on the total number of people present and any other injuries remain under investigation.
