TWIN FALLS, Idaho — The gunman who opened fire at a newly opened In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after killing three people and wounding seven others, police said on Sunday as investigators continued to examine the motive behind the attack.
Twin Falls Police identified the suspect as 24-year-old Chad Williams and said investigators believe he acted alone. Police Chief Matthew Hicks said an off-duty Idaho State Police trooper and an armed civilian returned fire during the attack, actions authorities said likely prevented additional casualties.
The shooting began Saturday afternoon at the restaurant, which had opened only days earlier, sending customers and employees fleeing as officers responded to reports of gunfire. Authorities said three victims were killed, including an In-N-Out employee, while seven others were injured. Some of the wounded remained hospitalized, according to officials.
Police said the names of those killed had not yet been released pending notification of their families. The motive for the shooting remains under investigation, and officials said there was no indication that additional suspects were involved.
In-N-Out President Lynsi Snyder confirmed that one of the company's employees was among those killed and said the company was cooperating fully with investigators while providing support to affected workers and families.
The FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting the investigation. Authorities urged witnesses and anyone with photographs or video of the incident to provide the material to investigators as the inquiry continues.
