NEW YORK — Heat and humidity were continuing to affect parts of the U.S. Northeast on Saturday, while persistent high temperatures across portions of the West kept heat-related hazards in place, according to weather forecasts and National Weather Service advisories.
The National Weather Service office in New York said a heat advisory remained in effect through Saturday evening for New York City, parts of southeastern New York and northeastern New Jersey. Heat index values were expected to reach about 100 degrees Fahrenheit in southeastern New York and as high as 104 degrees in parts of northeastern New Jersey, reflecting the combined effect of temperature and humidity.
The advisory followed several days of elevated heat and humidity across the region. Forecasts showed temperatures around 90 degrees Fahrenheit in parts of the New York metropolitan area, with humid conditions limiting overnight relief.
Farther north, heat-related advisories also remained in effect across portions of New England as temperatures and humidity created elevated risks for heat stress. Conditions varied considerably within the region, however, with coastal areas and locations farther north experiencing lower temperatures.
The National Weather Service advises people exposed to excessive heat to stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day and seek air-conditioned locations when possible. Health officials generally identify older adults, young children and people working or exercising outdoors as among those at greater risk from heat-related illness.
The West was facing a different pattern, with extreme heat persisting across parts of the Southwest and interior West. A heat wave earlier in the month pushed temperatures well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit across portions of Arizona, Nevada and California, with the National Weather Service issuing excessive-heat warnings for some areas.
Forecasts for Saturday included temperatures above 100 degrees in parts of the desert Southwest. Weather conditions in the region were also being monitored for their potential to increase stress on people, infrastructure and wildfire-prone areas.
The heat was not uniform nationwide, and conditions were expected to vary by location as weather systems moved across the country. In the Northeast, the latest heat advisory was scheduled to expire Saturday evening, while officials continued to urge residents to monitor local forecasts and heat alerts.
Forecasters were expected to reassess conditions as temperatures and humidity changed through the weekend.
