JAKARTA — The Indonesian Army has launched an investigation into the explosion at a military ammunition depot in East Java that killed one soldier and injured six others, as authorities work to determine the cause of the incident, officials said.
Army spokesperson Brig. Gen. Donny Pramono said an investigation team had been formed to conduct a comprehensive inquiry into the blast at the Army's central ammunition storage facility in Madiun Regency. He said the explosion occurred while personnel were carrying out routine inspection and maintenance of ammunition inside one of the storage warehouses.
According to the Army, one service member was confirmed dead in the incident. Four others sustained serious injuries and two suffered minor injuries. The wounded were evacuated to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Pramono said the military had not yet established the exact cause of the explosion or identified the specific type of ammunition involved. He urged the public and media to avoid speculation while investigators complete their work, adding that the inquiry would seek to establish the chronology of the incident and determine its cause.
The Army said the maintenance work was being conducted under established operational procedures but declined to provide further technical details pending the investigation. Security measures remain in place around the site as military personnel continue to assess the damage and collect evidence.
Authorities have not announced a timeline for completing the investigation. The cause of the explosion remained under investigation as of July 18.
