NEW YORK — Former Vice President Kamala Harris said Friday she is considering a bid for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, offering her most direct public comments to date on her political future after her 2024 defeat.

Harris made the remarks at the National Action Network convention in New York when asked by the Rev. Al Sharpton whether she planned to run again. “Listen, I might. I might. I’m thinking about it. I’m thinking about it,” she said, according to video and reports from multiple outlets including PBS, CNN and The New York Times.

The comments came as chants of “run again!” filled the room during the annual gathering of the civil rights organization founded by Sharpton. Harris, the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, spoke alongside other potential 2028 contenders, including former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Harris framed her consideration in terms of service to the American people. She told the audience she was thinking about a potential run “in the context of then: Who and where and how can the best job be done for the American people,” according to reporting by Al Jazeera and The Guardian.

Harris lost the 2024 presidential election to President Donald Trump. She had previously run for president in 2020 before becoming Joe Biden’s running mate and serving as vice president from 2021 to 2025.

Several other Democrats have begun positioning themselves for the 2028 race, with appearances at the National Action Network event signaling an early and competitive field. Harris has not announced any formal steps toward a campaign, and her office has not released further details on her plans.

As of Saturday, Harris had not elaborated on the timing or conditions under which she might enter the race. Democratic strategists and potential rivals have not issued immediate reactions to her comments in initial reporting.

The 2028 presidential election remains more than two years away, with the focus of many party leaders still on the 2026 midterm elections. Harris has not indicated whether she would seek the nomination if other prominent Democrats enter the contest.
