NEW ORLEANS — A 40-year-old Louisiana man was attacked by an alligator while fleeing police during a drunken driving investigation on Sunday but continued running before being apprehended, authorities said.
Victor Rivas of Montz was stopped by Louisiana State Police troopers on Interstate 310 in St. Charles Parish after showing signs of impairment, according to state police. He fled on foot, jumping from an elevated section of the interstate into a swamp below.
Rivas was later spotted walking along U.S. Highway 61. When officers approached, he fled again into a swampy area, where he was attacked by an alligator and sustained injuries to both arms, state police said. Despite the injuries, he continued to run before being located and taken into custody with the assistance of drone technology.
He was transported to a local hospital for treatment of arm injuries and later booked into jail. Rivas faces charges including driving while intoxicated, second offense, and resisting an officer, authorities said. Additional warrants were issued in connection with a hit-and-run and careless operation in neighboring Jefferson Parish.
“An alligator joined the law enforcement team and tried to convince Rivas that surrendering was the better option,” the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a statement shared on social media.
Body-worn camera footage released by authorities captured the incident, showing the alligator approaching and attacking Rivas in the water. The video has been widely circulated by local news outlets.
The incident occurred in a region known for its wetlands and alligator populations. Louisiana wildlife officials have previously warned residents and visitors about the risks of encountering alligators in swampy areas, particularly during warmer months.
State police and parish deputies coordinated the search and apprehension. No additional injuries to law enforcement personnel were reported. Details on the exact circumstances of the initial traffic stop and the extent of Rivas’ prior warrants remain subject to court proceedings.
Rivas remained in custody as of Tuesday. His court appearance date has not been publicly detailed. The case is being handled by local prosecutors. No further updates on his medical condition were immediately available from authorities.
