NEW YORK — Congressional candidates in New York made their final appeals to voters on Monday, the last full day of campaigning ahead of the state's primary election on Tuesday.

The primaries, set for June 23, will determine Democratic nominees for several U.S. House seats in New York City and surrounding areas, where competitive races pit progressive challengers against more established Democrats.

In the 10th Congressional District, former New York City Comptroller Brad Lander is challenging incumbent Rep. Dan Goldman. Lander, backed by progressive figures including Mayor Zohran Mamdani, has highlighted issues such as affordability and housing.

Mamdani appeared with Democratic congressional candidates including Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier at a get-out-the-vote rally last week in Brooklyn.

Other notable contests include the open 12th District, where candidates such as Alex Bores, Micah Lasher and others are competing following the retirement of longtime Rep. Jerry Nadler, and races in additional districts featuring progressive slates.

Campaigns have focused on turnout efforts, with early voting having concluded on Sunday. Officials and party organizations urged supporters to cast ballots on primary day.

The contests reflect broader tensions within the Democratic Party, with progressive groups seeking to influence the direction ahead of the November general election. Incumbents and challengers have emphasized their records on local and national issues.

"New York's congressional candidates have a final chance to make their case Monday on the last full day of campaigning before a primary election in which an ascendant progressive left is taking on establishment Democrats," the Associated Press reported.

As polls prepare to open at 6 a.m. Tuesday and close at 9 p.m., campaigns continued door-knocking, phone banking and last-minute rallies on Monday. Results are expected after polls close, with the winners advancing to the Nov. 3 general election.
