NEW YORK — New York City police are on heightened alert for potential malicious activity as the city hosts games in the ongoing NBA Finals between the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs at Madison Square Garden.
An internal New York Police Department assessment obtained by media outlets warned of a “heightened risk of attention by malicious actors across the ideological spectrum,” noting that high-profile sporting events could be seen as opportunities for targeted violence or disruption. The assessment was issued ahead of Game 3 on Monday, June 8, 2026, which drew additional security measures due to the attendance of President Donald Trump.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch and other officials outlined enhanced protocols around Madison Square Garden, including street closures and restricted access zones in coordination with the U.S. Secret Service. Starting in the afternoon before games, areas between West 30th and West 35th streets from Sixth to Eighth avenues have been subject to security perimeters, with entry limited to ticket holders, authorized personnel, commuters with train tickets, and local workers.
The Knicks lead the best-of-seven series 2-1 following Game 3, with Game 4 scheduled for Wednesday evening, June 10. Officials have urged fans without tickets to avoid the area and utilize designated viewing parties, such as one at Bryant Park or Plaza33, which have capacity limits.
Previous watch parties in Manhattan saw chaotic scenes, prompting police to disperse crowds and issue calls for responsible behavior. Law enforcement has deployed additional officers, counter-drone technology, and specialized units to manage both fan celebrations and potential threats.
The NBA Finals returned to New York for the first time in years, generating significant excitement in the city. Organizers and authorities have emphasized public safety amid large crowds expected for the remaining games.
A spokesperson for the NYPD said preparations aim to balance event enjoyment with security needs. “We want everyone to be able to enjoy the game safely,” the spokesperson said.
As of Wednesday, security operations continued around Madison Square Garden ahead of Game 4. Officials stated that monitoring of potential risks remains ongoing, with no specific threats publicly detailed. Details on the full scope of intelligence assessments were not disclosed.
City and league representatives continue to coordinate on measures for subsequent games, including potential Game 6 if the series extends.
