BAGHDAD — A U.S. service member was killed in northern Iraq during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said, marking the latest confirmed American military death as fighting linked to the conflict with Iran continued across the region.
CENTCOM said another service member sustained a minor injury in the incident and was receiving medical treatment. The military did not immediately identify the deceased, pending notification of next of kin, and provided no additional operational details about the explosion.
The death brings the confirmed number of U.S. service members killed since the conflict with Iran began to 17, according to U.S. military officials. The announcement followed separate U.S. reports that two American service members were killed in an Iranian strike in Jordan, while authorities continue examining unidentified remains recovered from the attack site.
The Pentagon has said nearly 100 U.S. personnel have suffered injuries during Iranian strikes since early July, with most having returned to duty after treatment.
The latest casualty came as U.S. forces carried out another round of strikes against Iranian military targets, while Iran continued missile and drone attacks against U.S. positions and regional infrastructure, according to U.S. and Iranian authorities.
