DENVER — Wildfires and severe weather systems affected broad areas of the western United States this week, prompting evacuation orders, fire-weather warnings and emergency preparations as officials monitored rapidly changing conditions across several states.

Fire crews continued to battle multiple large wildfires in parts of the West and Great Plains, while forecasters warned that strong winds, dry conditions and scattered thunderstorms could increase fire danger and complicate response efforts. The National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) reported on Friday that there were 11 uncontained large fires burning nationwide and that evacuations remained in place in areas threatened by the South Fork Fire in Nebraska. According to NIFC, more than 2,500 personnel were assigned to active incidents across the country.

Nebraska officials earlier declared a state of emergency in response to the South Fork Fire, which burned across a large area in Dawes County and prompted evacuation orders affecting residents near Crawford and Fort Robinson State Park, according to state authorities and local emergency officials. The cause of the fire had not been determined as of Monday.

Across portions of Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada and other western states, the National Weather Service issued fire-weather alerts in recent days, warning that low humidity, gusty winds and dry thunderstorms could create conditions favorable for rapid fire growth. A Red Flag Warning issued in southern Colorado cited the potential for fires to “catch and spread quickly” under critical weather conditions.

Meteorologists also reported storm activity affecting parts of the region. Severe weather disrupted activities in Kansas City over the weekend, where local authorities issued a tornado warning and advised residents to seek shelter. Officials said strong winds were expected as storms moved through the area.

The broader weather pattern has produced both wildfire concerns and storm threats across different sections of the country. Forecast agencies said a combination of drought, low fuel moisture and above-normal temperatures contributed to elevated wildfire risk in several western states. Fire-weather outlooks released this month identified parts of the Southwest, Great Basin and Rocky Mountain regions as areas of concern heading into the summer season.

Emergency management agencies urged residents in fire-prone areas to remain alert to evacuation notices and weather updates. “Exercise extreme caution with any outdoor burning,” the National Weather Service said in a recent warning issued for parts of Colorado.

As of Monday, firefighting operations continued in several states while weather officials maintained fire-weather advisories and monitored developing storm systems. Authorities said conditions could change quickly, and additional warnings or evacuation orders could be issued if necessary.
