WINDER, Georgia — Students at Apalachee High School returned to campus this week as the northeast Georgia community continued efforts to recover from the 2024 mass shooting, days after the teenager who carried out the attack was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The return marked another step in the school's recovery after Barrow County Superior Court Judge Nicholas Primm sentenced 16-year-old Colt Gray to spend the rest of his life in prison for killing two students and two teachers and wounding nine others in the Sept. 4, 2024, shooting. Gray pleaded guilty last month to 55 criminal charges, including murder, in a non-negotiated plea.
School officials said students and staff were being offered expanded counseling and mental health resources as classes resumed. District leaders have said support services would remain available throughout the school year as students, families and employees continue coping with the long-term effects of the attack.
The sentencing concluded the criminal case against Gray, whose guilty plea spared survivors and victims' families from a trial. During the multi-day hearing, prosecutors argued that Gray had carefully planned the attack and sought notoriety, while defense lawyers cited his troubled upbringing and mental health struggles in asking the court to leave open the possibility of parole. Judge Primm rejected that request, saying the severity of the crimes and the evidence presented warranted a sentence of life without parole.
The shooting killed teachers Richard Aspinwall and Cristina Irimie and students Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn. The attack also injured nine other people, according to court records and investigators.
The case drew national attention not only because of the shooting itself but also because prosecutors pursued charges against Gray's father, Colin Gray, for providing the rifle used in the attack despite warning signs about his son's behavior. He was convicted earlier this year and later sentenced to prison in a separate proceeding.
For many students returning to Apalachee High, the start of the new school year comes amid continued remembrance of those who were killed and ongoing efforts to restore a sense of normalcy. School and local officials have said recovery will remain a long-term process, with counseling, security measures and community support continuing as the district moves forward.
