BANGKOK — Thailand’s death toll from a school shooting in Nonthaburi province rose to nine on Saturday after a 12-year-old girl wounded in the attack died in hospital, police said.
The girl was among those caught in Friday’s shooting at Debsirin Nonthaburi School, northwest of Bangkok, police at Plai Bang Police Station told Reuters. She died a day after a 14-year-old boy allegedly killed his grandparents before opening fire at the school and killing five people, all teachers and staff, police said. The teenager then shot himself.
Police said the shooter used a gun belonging to his grandfather and fired at least 26 rounds during the attack. Another 34 rounds were found, according to police. Twenty-three people were wounded in the shooting, while nine of those injured were initially reported to be in critical condition.
The attack began at the school on Friday, sending students fleeing as emergency workers treated the wounded and transported them to hospitals. The school had about 3,100 students and 147 teachers during the 2025 academic year, according to district authorities.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the teenager had experienced stress related to his studies, based on consultations with officials, and pledged to introduce a new firearms control law. Authorities have not established a definitive motive for the shooting.
The incident was Thailand’s second school shooting of 2026. In February, a teacher was killed and a student injured during a shooting at a school in the southern province of Songkhla.
Thailand has experienced several deadly shootings in recent years, including a 2022 attack at a childcare centre that killed 36 people and a 2020 shooting rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima that killed 29.
Police said the investigation into Friday’s attack was continuing after the latest fatality.
