MIAMI — Host cities across the United States, Canada and Mexico are finalizing preparations for a major influx of visitors as the 2026 FIFA World Cup begins this week, with officials citing enhanced security, transportation and hospitality measures.

The tournament, co-hosted by the three North American countries, is expected to draw millions of international and domestic fans to 16 host cities over 39 days. In the United States alone, as many as 10 million visitors are projected to head to 11 host cities, according to U.S. government statements.

Cities including Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York/New Jersey, Philadelphia, Seattle and the San Francisco Bay Area have invested in infrastructure upgrades, stadium readiness and transit planning. Local authorities are coordinating with federal agencies on security involving more than 400 law enforcement partners.

"Host cities have received $625 million in federal grants to cover overtime and additional security costs," a White House World Cup Task Force official said.

Businesses in host cities are preparing for increased demand in hotels, restaurants and transportation. Some hotels adjusted rates after initial bookings tracked below earlier projections, according to industry reports. Fan festivals, public viewing areas and tourism campaigns have been launched to accommodate visitors.

Canadian host cities Toronto and Vancouver, and Mexican venues in Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey, are implementing similar measures. The opening match is scheduled for June 11 in Mexico City, with the final set for July 19 in New York/New Jersey.

Security planners have described the operation as unprecedented due to the scale of 48 teams and matches spread across a large geographic area. Anti-human trafficking efforts and crowd management protocols have been strengthened in coordination with local and federal authorities.

Transportation officials are advising fans to plan ahead for busy routes near stadiums and airports. Accommodation demand is expected to remain high, though details on exact occupancy rates remain unclear.
