DETROIT—Progressive Democrat Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan's Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, securing the party's nomination in one of the country's most closely watched and expensive primary contests and setting up a November election against Republican Mike Rogers for a seat critical to the balance of power in the Senate.
El-Sayed, a former Wayne County public health official, defeated U.S. Representative Haley Stevens after a closely fought race that exposed ideological divisions within the Democratic Party between its progressive and more centrist wings. Major U.S. news organizations projected El-Sayed the winner after vote counting continued into Wednesday following Tuesday's primary.
The victory marks a significant win for the party's progressive movement in a battleground state. El-Sayed was backed by prominent progressive figures, including Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, while Stevens received support from Democratic establishment leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Governor Gretchen Whitmer also endorsed Stevens late in the campaign.
The Democratic primary intensified after state Senator Mallory McMorrow suspended her campaign in July, leaving El-Sayed and Stevens in a head-to-head contest.
