MIDLAND, Texas — A gunman killed one person and injured 10 others in a shooting in Midland on Friday before dying after a standoff with police, officials said.
The shooting began around 8 a.m. in southeast Midland, with the suspect later moving to the 4600 block of West Wall Street in southwest Midland, according to city officials. Police responded to reports of gunfire coming from a building in that area.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong said at least 11 people were shot in total, including one who died at the scene. Ten others were taken to hospitals, primarily Midland Memorial Hospital, where some underwent surgery.
The suspect barricaded himself inside a building, leading to a standoff involving SWAT teams and armored units from multiple agencies. Officers used robots and drones during the operation, officials said. The situation was resolved around midday when the gunman was confirmed dead.
“The active shooter situation has ended and the shooter is confirmed deceased,” Blong said in a statement.
No further details about the suspect's identity or the circumstances leading to the shooting were immediately released. Police Chief Seth Snow and other officials said the scene was secured and the area cleared, with the FBI assisting in the investigation.
Midland, an oil hub city of about 135,000 people in West Texas, saw first responders from various agencies converge on the area. Hospital officials reported treating victims, with some in stable condition after procedures.
As of Friday afternoon, authorities had not provided additional information on the victims' conditions or any possible motive. The investigation remains ongoing.
Officials urged the public to avoid the area while the scene was processed. Support was expressed for those affected, including victims, families and responding officers.
