MIDLAND, Texas — A gunman killed one person and injured at least nine others in a shooting in Midland on Friday before dying following a standoff with police, officials said.
The incident began Friday morning in the southwestern part of the city, with officers responding to reports of gunfire in the 4600 block of West Wall Street, according to Midland city officials and police. The suspected shooter barricaded himself inside a building, leading to a standoff that lasted several hours.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong said there were 11 known victims in total, including one person who died at the scene. Nine others were transported to Midland Memorial Hospital, where four underwent surgery and others were treated for injuries, hospital officials said. Some patients have since been discharged.
"The active shooter situation has ended and the shooter is confirmed deceased," Blong said in a statement.
Police Chief Seth Snow confirmed that officers heard gunfire coming from the building and quickly established a perimeter with support from SWAT teams and other agencies. Authorities used robots and drones to confirm the suspect was deceased around midday, officials said. No officers were injured.
The suspect's identity has not been released, and details about a possible motive remain unclear as the investigation continues, authorities said. The FBI is assisting with the probe.
Midland, an oil hub city of about 135,000 residents in West Texas, saw residents urged to avoid the area during the active situation. The scene was later secured with no further threats reported.
Governor Greg Abbott expressed support for the victims and praised first responders, according to reports from the incident.
As of Saturday, authorities continued to investigate the shooting. Further details on the victims and the sequence of events were not immediately available.
