ATLANTA—A Delta Air Lines flight bound for Orlando returned to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Saturday after fumes were reported in the flight deck, prompting an emergency evacuation on the taxiway, according to the airline and media reports.
Delta Flight 2204 had departed Atlanta on Aug. 8 when the crew reported fumes in the cockpit and decided to return to the airport, Delta said in a statement cited by CNN and other news outlets. The aircraft landed safely shortly before 7:30 a.m. local time, according to reports.
A slide evacuation was carried out after the aircraft reached the ground, with passengers leaving the plane on the taxiway, Delta said. The flight was carrying about 200 passengers and six crew members, according to media reports.
One passenger and one crew member received medical attention following the evacuation, while other passengers were taken by bus to the terminal, Fox 5 Atlanta reported. Earlier reports said no serious injuries had been reported.
Video posted by a passenger and cited by media outlets showed travelers leaving the aircraft through emergency exits and using evacuation slides. Passengers were later accommodated on another aircraft for the trip to Orlando, Delta said.
“The flight crew followed procedures to return to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport after reports of fumes in the flight deck,” Delta said in its statement. The airline added that safety was its priority and apologized for the disruption.
The cause of the fumes was not immediately established. Delta said the aircraft was undergoing inspection, according to reports.
The Federal Aviation Administration was investigating the incident, media reports said. The agency had not publicly released a determination on the source of the fumes by the latest reports.
The incident comes after several recent U.S. aviation events involving smoke or fumes aboard passenger aircraft, though there was no indication that the Atlanta incident was connected to those cases.
Delta Flight 2204 was scheduled to operate between Atlanta and Orlando. The aircraft and the affected flight were being handled by the airline as authorities continued to assess what caused the fumes.
