DYERSVILLE, Iowa—Baseball Hall of Famers emerged from the cornfields before the Philadelphia Phillies faced the Minnesota Twins at the Field of Dreams site on Thursday, reviving one of Major League Baseball’s signature pregame traditions as the event returned to Iowa for the first time since 2022.
The Hall of Famers’ appearance was part of the pregame ceremony at the ballpark in Dyersville, where MLB staged its third regular-season Field of Dreams game. The ceremony echoed the 2022 event, when Hall of Famers associated with the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds walked out of the cornfields before those teams played.
The 2026 game matched the Twins and Phillies at the site made famous by the 1989 film “Field of Dreams.” MLB said the game was the first at the location since the Cubs defeated the Reds there in 2022. The inaugural game in 2021 featured the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees.
Philadelphia won Thursday’s game 7-1, with Kyle Schwarber hitting two home runs and driving in three runs. Brandon Marsh also homered, while Aaron Nola allowed one run over five innings and struck out nine as the Phillies secured the victory. Minnesota’s Luke Keaschall hit a solo home run.
The game was played at a temporary ballpark adjacent to the original movie site and counted as a Twins home game. MLB scheduled the event as part of a broader return to Dyersville that also included a Triple-A game on Aug. 11 between the Iowa Cubs and St. Paul Saints.
The 2026 edition was also the first Field of Dreams game to be carried by Netflix under MLB’s expanded partnership with the streaming service. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred said when the game was announced that the league wanted to create a distinctive event for the participating teams and fans.
The Field of Dreams site has hosted MLB games since 2021, when Tim Anderson hit a two-run, walk-off homer to give Chicago a 9-8 victory over New York. The 2022 game ended with the Cubs beating Cincinnati 4-2.
Thursday’s contest marked the latest MLB game at the Iowa site, with the league’s return completed after a four-year gap between major-league events.
