WASHINGTON — The U.S. House Financial Services Committee convened a hearing on Wednesday to examine the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's semi-annual report, calling Acting Director Russell Vought to testify as lawmakers scrutinized the agency's operations, priorities and oversight of consumer financial markets.
The hearing, titled "The Semi-Annual Report of the Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection," was held at the Rayburn House Office Building as part of the committee's oversight responsibilities. According to the committee, Vought appeared as the sole witness and was scheduled to address the bureau's activities and respond to questions from members.
The hearing comes as the CFPB remains the focus of debate in Washington over its role in regulating financial institutions and enforcing federal consumer protection laws. Republicans have argued the agency requires structural reforms and greater accountability, while Democrats have defended the bureau's consumer protection mission and its enforcement authorities.
Committee materials released ahead of the hearing also listed the CFPB Reform Act of 2026 among the legislation associated with the proceeding, although the primary purpose of the session was oversight of the bureau's required semi-annual report to Congress.
The Financial Services Committee had announced the hearing weeks in advance as part of its July oversight agenda, which also included hearings on the Federal Reserve's monetary policy report, financial technology and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau was established following the 2008 financial crisis to oversee consumer financial products and services, including mortgages, credit cards, student loans and other lending markets. The bureau is required to submit regular reports to Congress and its director traditionally appears before House and Senate committees to discuss the agency's work and answer lawmakers' questions.
The House hearing was scheduled to be followed by a similar appearance by Vought before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee on Thursday, where lawmakers are expected to continue examining the bureau's policies and operations.
