MEDIA, Pennsylvania — A woman linked by authorities to the cult-like group known as the Zizians appeared in court this week after being charged with murder and related offenses in connection with the 2022 shooting deaths of her parents, according to prosecutors and court records.
Michelle Zajko, who has been held in Maryland on separate charges since 2025, faces charges including murder, burglary and conspiracy in the deaths of Richard and Rita Zajko at their home in Chester Heights, Pennsylvania, Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said on Wednesday. Prosecutors allege she was involved in planning or carrying out the killings and did not act alone.
The charges stem from a long-running investigation into the deaths, which occurred on Dec. 31, 2022. Authorities said evidence gathered from a neighbor’s doorbell camera, cellphone records and ballistic analysis linked Zajko to the crime scene. Prosecutors said investigators believe additional individuals may have participated, though no other suspects have been charged in the case.
“At this time we do not know who her co-conspirators were, but we are very certain that Michelle Zajko was in the home and arranged for the death of her parents,” Rouse said during a news conference.
Zajko has denied involvement in the killings. In previous public statements and court filings, she said she did not murder her parents and suggested alternative explanations for their deaths. Court records reviewed by media outlets did not immediately indicate whether she had legal representation in the Pennsylvania case.
Authorities have described the Zizians as a loosely connected group associated with radical beliefs and several violent incidents in multiple U.S. states. Investigators have linked members or associates of the group to a number of deaths and criminal cases in California, Pennsylvania and Vermont, though details vary among jurisdictions and some cases remain pending.
Zajko has also faced separate allegations related to firearms connected to other investigations involving individuals associated with the group. Those matters are being handled in different courts and remain separate from the Pennsylvania homicide case.
During the latest court proceedings, prosecutors said the investigation into the deaths of Richard and Rita Zajko remains active. Authorities said efforts are continuing to identify any additional suspects who may have been involved. Zajko remains in custody, and further court appearances are expected as the case moves forward.
