MIDLAND, Texas — One person was killed and 10 others were injured in a mass shooting in Midland on Friday morning, authorities said, with the suspect later found dead following a standoff with law enforcement.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. CT in the 4600 block of West Wall Street, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. The suspect, identified as Victor Mata Villarreal, 45, of Odessa, opened fire on bystanders and responding officers before barricading himself inside an abandoned veterinary clinic.
The victim was identified as Edward Randall Scott, 62, a Midland city employee. Ten other people sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals, officials said. No law enforcement officers were reported injured.
Villarreal had been wanted in connection with an incident days earlier in which he allegedly fired at a peace officer, according to authorities. After an hours-long standoff involving multiple agencies, including the Midland Police Department and Texas Rangers, the suspect was found deceased inside the building around 12:30 p.m. CT.
Midland officials confirmed the resolution of the active shooter situation. The area remained secured as investigators processed the scene.
Mayor Lori Blong described the morning as heartbreaking in public statements. Texas state leaders offered condolences and support for first responders and victims’ families.
The Texas Rangers are leading the investigation into the shooting. Details about the suspect’s motive and the full circumstances remain under review, authorities said. The identities and conditions of the injured were not immediately released.
The shooting drew a large law enforcement response, including armored vehicles, SWAT teams and helicopters. Community members gathered for a vigil in the aftermath.
As of Saturday, officials continued to investigate the incident. Further updates on the conditions of the injured and any additional charges or findings were expected as the probe progresses.
