NEW YORK — Security measures have been significantly heightened for Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden, following fan incidents during earlier games in the series and ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s planned attendance, officials said.
A fan ran onto the court during the fourth quarter of Game 1 in San Antonio on June 3, briefly halting play as the New York Knicks defeated the San Antonio Spurs 105-95. The individual attempted to take a selfie with Spurs star Victor Wembanyama and was arrested. A second person was also involved, according to league officials. Both received lifetime bans from all NBA arenas.
In response to the on-court disruption and the high-profile nature of the Finals matchup, which marks the Knicks’ first appearance since 1999, authorities and venue operators have implemented enhanced protocols for the series.
For Monday’s Game 3, the Knicks announced a strict no-bag policy and TSA-style screening procedures for all ticket holders. Fans were advised to arrive at least two hours early, limit personal items to a minimum, and prepare for extensive security checks, including magnetometers and prohibited item restrictions. Road closures around the arena and cancellation of outdoor watch parties were also put in place.
New York Police Department assessments cited a “heightened risk of attention by malicious actors” at the high-profile event, prompting additional deployments of SWAT teams, bomb technicians and other resources.
The U.S. Secret Service is involved in security planning due to Trump’s attendance, the first by a sitting president at an NBA Finals game. “A strict no-bag policy will be in effect, and fans should make every effort to limit personal items to an absolute minimum,” the Knicks said in a statement.
The Spurs lead the best-of-seven series, but specific scores from Games 1 and 2 were not immediately detailed in security-related reports. Game 3 is scheduled to tip off in the evening at Madison Square Garden.
NBA officials and local law enforcement have emphasized coordination to ensure public safety while minimizing disruptions for attendees. Additional intelligence sharing and monitoring measures are in effect.
As of Tuesday, searches for any further incidents during the series remained ongoing, though no additional on-court disruptions were reported. Officials have not released full details on the total number of security personnel deployed. The series is expected to continue with similar precautions for subsequent games if necessary.
