WASHINGTON — Nearly 100 U.S. service members have been injured since July 7 during the latest escalation in the conflict with Iran, the Pentagon said on Monday, with officials stating that most of the injuries were minor and the overwhelming majority of affected personnel have already returned to duty.
Chief Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell said almost 100 service members "were deemed to have some degree of injury since July 7, 2026," adding that 96% had resumed their duties. He said the vast majority of the injuries were minor concussions sustained during Iranian missile and drone attacks on U.S. military installations in the region.
The updated casualty figures come as the United States and Iran continue exchanging military strikes following the collapse of a ceasefire earlier this month. U.S. forces have carried out successive nights of strikes against Iranian military targets, while Iran has launched retaliatory attacks against U.S. positions and allied facilities across the Middle East, according to U.S. officials.
Pentagon officials said the injuries occurred across multiple incidents rather than a single attack. Several recent strikes targeted U.S. bases in Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain and other locations where American forces are deployed. Defense officials have not released a detailed breakdown of injuries by location or unit, citing operational security.
The Pentagon's latest disclosure followed media reports questioning whether earlier injuries from Iranian attacks had been publicly reported. Parnell rejected suggestions that the department had concealed casualty information, saying the figures reflected ongoing assessments and emphasizing that injury data continue to be updated as medical evaluations are completed.
The latest figures add to the growing human toll of the conflict. U.S. officials have also confirmed recent American military fatalities in attacks linked to the escalation, while saying the majority of wounded personnel have recovered sufficiently to resume service.
Military officials have not indicated any change to force posture based solely on the injury totals, and U.S. Central Command has continued operations against Iranian military targets. The Pentagon has said it will continue providing updates on casualties and operational developments as additional information is verified.
