WASHINGTON — New laws took effect across multiple U.S. states on Tuesday, ushering in changes ranging from minimum wage increases to consumer protections and education policies.
Several states and localities raised minimum wages, affecting workers in sectors including hospitality and healthcare. In California, healthcare workers at large systems saw hourly rates climb to $25 in some cases, while numerous cities and counties implemented local hikes, such as San Francisco to $19.61 and Los Angeles to around $18.40-$18.47. Alaska’s statewide minimum wage rose to $14 per hour, and Oregon adjusted rates by region, reaching as high as $16.80 in the Portland area.
In California, a broad package of measures also activated. Restaurants with 20 or more locations must now disclose major food allergens on menus under the new Allergen Disclosure for Dining Experience Act. Streaming services are required to match advertisement volumes to programming levels to curb sudden loud commercials. Public K-12 schools face new limits or bans on student cellphone use during the school day, alongside requirements for all-gender restrooms.
Other states reported varied updates. Connecticut enacted more than 80 new laws, expanding benefits for first responders. Minnesota implemented measures including anonymous school threat reporting systems. Kansas saw 124 new laws activate, covering topics from criminal penalties to other regulatory tweaks.
Officials in affected states have urged businesses and residents to review compliance requirements. Many changes stem from legislation passed in 2025 and 2026 sessions.
