BROOKLYN, N.Y. — An NYPD officer was shot in the leg during a standoff with a barricaded suspect in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Friday morning, officials said.
Police responded to a report of shots fired inside a home at 190 Kosciuszko Street around 5:45 a.m., according to the NYPD. Officers heard additional gunfire upon arrival. A 48-year-old man, identified as Lamin Simmons, barricaded himself inside with a firearm.
NYPD Emergency Service Unit Detective Matthew Gale was struck in the left leg during an exchange of gunfire. At least four officers returned fire, striking Simmons, officials said. Simmons was transported to Woodhull Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Gale, a veteran officer, suffered a tibial fracture and was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was reported in stable condition and expected to recover, the NYPD said. Two other officers sustained minor injuries.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the suspect fired at officers multiple times during the standoff. "The perpetrator fired at our officers, striking one officer in the leg," she stated at a news conference.
The incident prompted a response from the hostage negotiations team. Details about what led to the initial shots fired inside the home remained unclear Friday.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani and other city officials joined the commissioner in briefing reporters on the events. The department described Gale as having put "his life on the line."
As of Friday evening, the investigation into the shooting was ongoing. The officer remained hospitalized, and no further updates on his condition were immediately available.
