WILMINGTON, Del. — Police in Wilmington are investigating a fatal shooting that left one person dead this week, as authorities continue efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.
The shooting occurred Tuesday evening in Wilmington’s Hilltop neighborhood, where officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 1600 block of West 5th Street at about 8:33 p.m., according to the Wilmington Police Department. Officers arriving at the scene found a 16-year-old male suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victim, and police said details regarding a possible motive remain unclear. Investigators also have not announced any arrests in connection with the shooting. The case remains under active investigation, according to police statements released on Wednesday.
“Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact investigators,” Wilmington police said in a public appeal for assistance. Officials also urged witnesses to provide information through Delaware Crime Stoppers or directly to detectives assigned to the case.
The fatal shooting is one of several recent gun-related incidents that have drawn attention from law enforcement officials in Wilmington. Earlier this month, authorities investigated a separate shooting at ChristianaCare’s Wilmington Hospital that left one person dead and another injured. Police described that incident as a targeted attack and later arrested a suspect in Philadelphia.
Officials have not indicated whether the latest shooting is connected to any other recent cases. Wilmington police said detectives are reviewing evidence, conducting interviews and examining information gathered at the scene as part of their investigation.
Community support services have also been made available to those affected by the incident. Police said victim assistance resources remain available to family members and others impacted by the shooting.
Local officials have repeatedly called on residents to cooperate with investigations involving violent crime. Law enforcement authorities said witness information can be critical in helping detectives establish timelines and identify suspects.
