MADRID — Florentino Pérez was re-elected as president of Real Madrid on Sunday, securing a new term until 2030 in the club's first contested presidential election in 20 years.
Pérez defeated challenger Enrique Riquelme, receiving 21,741 votes, or about 65 percent of the total, according to the club's electoral commission. Riquelme received 11,814 votes. Voter turnout reached roughly 35 percent among approximately 95,000 registered members.
Voting took place at the club's Valdebebas training ground, with polls open from morning until evening on June 7. Pérez, who has served as president since 2009 after an earlier term from 2000 to 2006, called the snap election earlier this year seeking a vote of confidence following two consecutive seasons without major trophies.
"This is the Real Madrid we all want. An independent Real Madrid. A Real Madrid that is not afraid of challenges," Pérez said in remarks after the results were announced.
The election marked a rare competitive vote for the member-owned Spanish club, which had seen Pérez re-elected unopposed in previous cycles. Riquelme, a businessman, had criticized aspects of Pérez's leadership, including plans related to club ownership structure.
Real Madrid operates as one of a small number of major European clubs still owned by its socios, or members. The presidential term runs for four years, with Pérez's victory extending his long tenure at the helm of one of the world's most prominent football clubs.
Pérez has overseen significant success during his time in office, including multiple Champions League titles and high-profile player signings. His re-election comes amid expectations for further squad strengthening and potential managerial changes.
Club officials reported smooth conduct of the voting process, with results certified after full counting of in-person and mail-in ballots. Both candidates had mobilized support in the lead-up to the poll.
