WASHINGTON — A Senate confirmation hearing for President Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the nation’s intelligence community was postponed on Wednesday after the president announced via social media that he was cancelling the proceedings.

The Senate Intelligence Committee had scheduled an afternoon hearing for Jay Clayton, Trump’s pick for director of national intelligence. The session was abruptly delayed following an early-morning post by Trump on Truth Social, in which he stated he was halting the process.

In the post, Trump linked the delay to other priorities, including the confirmation of another nominee and disagreements over legislation. “Regarding the approval of our Great Patriot, Jay Clayton, we are cancelling the Senate Hearing RE: DNI today, and will not be going forward until Jamie McDonald is approved to be U.S. Attorney,” Trump wrote. “In the meantime, Bill Pulte will remain as the Acting Director of National Intelligence.”

Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., initially indicated the hearing would proceed as scheduled unless the president directed otherwise. Hours later, the committee postponed the session.

The postponement came as Republicans control both the White House and Congress following the 2024 elections. Clayton, a former chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission, was nominated to replace the acting director. Details on the next steps for the nomination remain unclear.

Trump’s action highlighted tensions within the party over the pace of confirmations and linked issues, including a lapsed surveillance authority and stalled legislation on voter identification. Senate GOP leaders expressed surprise at the timing of the post, which appeared less than 12 hours before the hearing was set to begin.

“Regrettable that the president has directed Jay Clayton not to appear at his confirmation hearing today,” Cotton said in a statement.

Democrats on the committee have not yet issued public statements on the delay. Some lawmakers had pushed for a swift confirmation process for the key national security position.

The episode underscores ongoing challenges in advancing Trump’s nominees through the Senate despite Republican majorities. Confirmation hearings for several other administration picks have faced procedural hurdles or external disruptions in recent months.

As of Thursday, no new date has been set for Clayton’s hearing. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Senate Intelligence Committee said the confirmation process would continue but provided no further timeline.
