MEXICO CITY — Colombian superstar Shakira headlined the first of three 2026 FIFA World Cup opening ceremonies, performing the official tournament song “Dai Dai” with Nigerian artist Burna Boy at Estadio Azteca on June 11, 2026, ahead of the opening match between hosts Mexico and South Africa.
The ceremony, which featured traditional Mexican elements including papel picado and folkloric artistry, took place about 90 minutes before kickoff at the historic venue. Other performers included J Balvin, Tyla, Alejandro Fernández, Belinda, Maná, Danny Ocean, Lila Downs and Los Ángeles Azules, with Mexican-American actress Salma Hayek Pinault appearing as a FIFA ambassador.
Shakira, who previously performed the 2010 World Cup anthem “Waka Waka,” sang the opening verse of “Dai Dai” and danced energetically before Burna Boy joined her on stage. The pair performed the song together in front of a large crowd and a replica of the World Cup trophy, closing the pre-match entertainment.
The event marked the start of the expanded 48-team tournament co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada. Separate opening ceremonies are scheduled for Toronto and Los Angeles in the coming days.
FIFA officials described the multi-city approach as a way to celebrate the tournament across all host nations. Shakira’s involvement built on her longstanding connection to football anthems, drawing significant global attention.
The performance received positive reactions on social media, with fans praising the energy and cultural mix. “Shakira owning the World Cup stage once again,” one social media user noted in related coverage.
Following the ceremony, Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match. The full tournament runs through July 2026, with the final set for MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
As of June 12, 2026, preparations continue for the remaining opening ceremonies. Details on viewership figures or further reactions from FIFA and artists remain subject to ongoing reporting. Organizers did not immediately provide additional statements beyond the event.
