BALTIMORE — The U.S. Social Security Administration has expanded its fast-track disability program to cover 14 additional severe medical conditions, bringing the total number of conditions eligible for expedited processing to 314, the agency said this week.
The additions to the Compassionate Allowances (CAL) list are intended to accelerate disability claims for people with serious diseases that meet Social Security's statutory definition of disability. The agency said more than 1.2 million people have been approved through the program since it began in 2008.
The newly added conditions include Adenylosuccinate Lyase Deficiency, Aicardi Syndrome, Baraitser-Winter Syndrome, Beare-Stevenson Cutis Gyrata Syndrome, Bohring-Opitz Syndrome, CASK-Related Gene Disorders, Hepatosplenic T-Cell Lymphoma, Lafora Disease, Malignant Migrating Partial Seizures of Infancy, OPHN1 Syndrome, Primary Cardiac Sarcoma, Primary Intracranial Malignant Melanoma, Uveal Melanoma with Metastases and Warburg Micro Syndrome.
"Social Security is strengthening our disability programs and making the disability determination process better, faster and higher-quality to serve the American public," Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano said in a statement. "The Compassionate Allowances initiative cuts through red tape and allows us to deliver support to individuals who experience life-changing diagnoses and need help fast."
Under the CAL program, Social Security identifies claims involving qualifying conditions and gives them expedited processing. The agency uses technology to identify potential CAL conditions in disability applications and, through its Health IT program, can obtain electronic medical records from participating sources to help adjudicators make decisions more quickly.
The expansion adds to a program that has steadily grown since its launch. In August 2025, the agency added 13 conditions, bringing the list at that time to 300. Those additions included rare genetic disorders, neurological diseases and cancers.
Being on the CAL list does not eliminate the need for a disability claim or medical evidence. Social Security determines eligibility under its disability rules, with medical records used to establish whether an applicant meets the applicable standard.
The latest expansion was announced on Aug. 11, according to reports citing the agency, and the CAL list now stands at 314 conditions.
