NEW YORK — Stanford Law School has taken the sole top spot in U.S. News & World Report's 2026 Best Law Schools rankings, ending Yale Law School's decades-long position at No. 1, the publication said.

The rankings, released earlier this year, placed Stanford University first overall among nearly 200 law schools. The University of Chicago and Yale University tied for second, followed by the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and the University of Virginia School of Law tied for fourth, according to U.S. News data.

U.S. News evaluates law schools based on factors including peer assessment scores, lawyer and judge assessments, employment outcomes, bar passage rates and selectivity measures such as median LSAT and GPA. Stanford achieved the highest overall score, with a perfect 100 in the latest assessment.

This marks the first time in the 36-year history of the rankings that Yale has not held the top position outright. Stanford had previously tied with Yale for the No. 1 spot in recent years. The shift reflects changes in methodology and performance across assessed categories.

"Stanford Law School maintained its top spot," U.S. News reported in its analysis of the 2026 rankings. The publication noted strong performance by several schools in employment and bar passage metrics contributing to their positions.

Harvard Law School ranked sixth, with Duke University and New York University tied for seventh. Columbia, Northwestern and Michigan tied for ninth. Cornell University rose notably in the standings, while some other schools experienced shifts.

Law school deans and administrators have long debated the influence of such rankings on admissions and institutional priorities. Some schools, including Stanford in prior years, have questioned aspects of the methodology or chosen not to participate fully in data submissions.

The rankings influence prospective students, with many using them to guide application decisions alongside factors like location, cost, clinical opportunities and faculty expertise. Officials at top schools often highlight their strengths in specialized programs, such as Stanford's emphasis on interdisciplinary studies and public interest law.

Schools continue to provide updated data for future assessments, with full methodology and additional specialty rankings available on the publication's website.
