VICHY — Riders set out on the 11th stage of the 2026 Tour de France on Wednesday with the race returning to flatter terrain after Tadej Pogačar strengthened his grip on the yellow jersey in the previous stage, while sprinters targeted one of their limited remaining opportunities for victory.
The 161.3-kilometre stage from Vichy to Nevers features a largely flat profile with only two fourth-category climbs, making it one of the race's most favorable days for a bunch sprint if the peloton reels in any early breakaway. Organizers scheduled the stage following Tuesday's mountainous Bastille Day contest, in which Pogačar extended his overall lead.
An early break formed shortly after the start, with France's Julian Alaphilippe joined by Mathis Le Berre, Portugal's Nelson Oliveira and Denmark's Anthon Charmig. The quartet established a modest advantage over the peloton as teams with sprint ambitions monitored the gap during the opening kilometres.
Pogačar, riding for UAE Team Emirates-XRG, began the day holding a lead of 3 minutes 36 seconds over Jonas Vingegaard in the general classification after attacking to win Stage 10 in Le Lioran. Olympic champion Remco Evenepoel started the stage third overall following Tuesday's reshuffle in the standings.
The stage also offered an important opportunity in the points competition, with green jersey holder Mads Pedersen seeking to strengthen his advantage while sprint specialist Tim Merlier chased a third stage victory of this year's race. Analysts had widely expected sprint teams to control the race if the breakaway remained within reach.
According to the Tour de France route, the riders are due to finish in Nevers later on Wednesday before the race resumes on Thursday with Stage 12 from the Circuit Nevers Magny-Cours to Chalon-sur-Saône. Official stage and overall classifications will be published after the finish.
