KYIV — Ukraine said on Friday its forces had struck industrial and energy facilities inside Russia, including a major gas-processing complex in the Leningrad region, as Kyiv continues a campaign of long-range attacks aimed at disrupting infrastructure it says supports Moscow’s war effort.
Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed a strike on the Novatek-Ust-Luga complex, a major gas-processing facility near Russia’s Baltic coast, according to Ukrainian military officials. The facility processes gas condensate and is located roughly 870 km from Ukraine, Ukrainian sources said.
Russian authorities have reported a series of Ukrainian drone attacks in recent days, including strikes affecting industrial and energy infrastructure. Kyiv has increasingly targeted oil refineries, petrochemical plants and port facilities as part of what Ukrainian officials describe as an effort to reduce Russia’s capacity to sustain its military campaign.
Ukraine also previously confirmed strikes on the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat refinery in Russia’s Bashkortostan region, about 1,300 km from Ukrainian territory. The facility suffered a fire following a Ukrainian drone attack, according to Russian and Ukrainian accounts, while Ukrainian officials said the strike was part of operations against Russia’s energy infrastructure.
The attacks form part of a broader Ukrainian campaign against Russian energy facilities. Reuters reported that Ukrainian forces have targeted refineries and petrochemical sites across Russia, with several facilities suffering fires, damage or temporary shutdowns. Moscow has repeatedly condemned the attacks, while Kyiv says Russia’s energy sector is directly relevant to its ability to finance and supply the war.
Russia has continued to conduct its own long-range attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure. On Aug. 10, Russian forces struck the Zaporizhzhia steelworks, killing workers and forcing production to halt, according to Ukrainian officials and Reuters. Russia said the facility produced steel used for military purposes.
The latest Ukrainian strikes come amid continued fighting and heightened attacks on infrastructure on both sides. Ukrainian officials have not provided a comprehensive assessment of damage from the latest operations, and independent verification of the full extent of damage at the targeted Russian facilities was not immediately available.
