NEW YORK — Preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup intensified across host cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico this week, with national teams arriving at base camps and final infrastructure checks underway less than a week before the tournament opener.
The 48-team event, co-hosted by the three North American nations, is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19. Sixteen cities will host 104 matches, with 11 venues in the U.S., three in Mexico and two in Canada, according to FIFA.
FIFA has confirmed team base camps for all participating nations, with 39 located in the United States, seven in Mexico and two in Canada. Several squads have already settled into training facilities, including those near host cities such as Kansas City, which will accommodate multiple teams.
Local organizing committees reported progress on transportation, security and fan zones. In Philadelphia, work continues at Lincoln Financial Field ahead of six scheduled matches, while fan festivals are being finalized in multiple locations including New York/New Jersey and Toronto.
FIFA said all venues have completed required upgrades and testing. Security operations have been described as unprecedented in scale, with coordinated efforts across federal, state and local agencies.
The tournament opens on June 11 in Mexico City, where Mexico faces South Africa at the renovated Estadio Azteca. The United States begins its campaign shortly after, with the final set for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New York/New Jersey.
Host city officials highlighted readiness efforts. "We are excited to welcome the world and showcase what our region has to offer," a spokesperson for the New York/New Jersey host committee said in a statement.
Team arrivals have accelerated in recent days, with squads required to be in their base camps at least five days before their first match. Training sessions have begun at various sites, including university and professional club facilities.
