SAN FRANCISCO — Apple said its App Store ecosystem facilitated more than $1.4 trillion in global developer billings and sales in 2025, according to a study by economists at Analysis Group.
The figure, announced by the company on June 4, reflects continued expansion of the platform, which has nearly tripled in size since 2019. For more than 90 percent of the billings and sales, developers paid no commission to Apple, the company said.
Sales of physical goods and services accounted for $1.1 trillion of the total, driven by categories including grocery, food delivery and pickup, general retail, and travel, according to the study. Developer billings and sales for digital goods and services reached $149 billion, led by games, enterprise apps, and video streaming. In-app advertising revenue from ads placed by developers totaled $151 billion.
The announcement highlights the role of emerging technologies. In 2025, more than 40 of the top 100 apps on the App Store featured consumer-facing artificial intelligence capabilities, and those apps experienced stronger billing growth than other top apps, Apple said. Apps with AI saw four times more growth in billings compared to non-AI apps in the top 100.
" The App Store continues to support developers as they build new experiences for users around the world, including apps that use emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI)," the company stated in its release.
The report comes amid ongoing global scrutiny of app store policies, including commission rates and competition issues. Apple charges a 30 percent commission on many digital goods and services sold through the App Store, with reduced rates of 15 percent available under certain programs for qualifying developers. Critics have argued that such fees limit competition, while Apple maintains that the platform provides a secure environment and tools that benefit developers.
The study was conducted by economists at Analysis Group. Apple has commissioned similar reports in prior years, including one showing $1.3 trillion in 2024.
Separately, Apple has reported that developers have earned more than $550 billion on the App Store since its launch in 2008. The platform sees over 850 million average weekly users globally.
As of June 13, 2026, Apple continues to introduce new tools for developers, including enhanced capabilities for marketing apps, acquiring users, and managing subscriptions. Details on specific impacts from these updates remain unclear.
