LAUSANNE — Athletes across multiple sports competed in qualifying events and selection trials this week as national federations finalized teams for major international tournaments scheduled later in 2026, according to governing bodies and event organizers.
Swimming trials, athletics meets and football qualification programs were among the events taking place in June as competitors sought places at international championships, regional tournaments and multi-sport events. National federations in several countries used the competitions to determine team selections for upcoming events, including the 2026 Commonwealth Games, continental championships and world-level competitions.
In Australia, swimmers competed at national trials that served as a key selection event for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Pan Pacific Championships later this year. Swimming Australia announced a squad of about 60 athletes following the trials. Officials said performances at the meet would play a significant role in determining international representation.
“We have seen strong performances across multiple events,” Swimming Australia officials said in statements released after the trials, highlighting the importance of qualification competitions in assembling national teams.
Athletics competitors also continued efforts to secure places at major championships through national and international meets. Several countries have published qualification standards and selection procedures for 2026 international competitions, including continental championships and relay events. National federations said athletes must meet performance benchmarks and selection criteria before final team announcements are made.
In football, qualification pathways remained active for international tournaments, while governing bodies continued preparations for upcoming competitions. FIFA said qualification processes for future events remained ongoing in several regions, with federations working to finalize remaining places through playoffs and qualifying matches.
Elsewhere, athletes in triathlon, artistic swimming and other Olympic sports competed in events that contribute to rankings or qualification systems used for international championships. Organizers of the World Triathlon Championship Series said competitors were seeking valuable points toward season standings and future tournament participation. World Aquatics also listed multiple qualifying competitions scheduled throughout June and later in the year.
Sports administrators said qualifying events remain a central part of the selection process, allowing athletes to meet standards established by international federations while providing national associations with performance data ahead of major tournaments.
As of Monday, several qualification competitions were still underway, and additional team selections were expected in the coming weeks. Organizers said final rosters for some tournaments would be confirmed after remaining qualifying events conclude, while details of certain selection processes remained unclear.
