MIRPUR, Bangladesh — Bangladesh defeated Australia by 86 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method in the first one-day international at the Shere Bangla National Stadium on Tuesday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Bangladesh posted 284 for 8 in 50 overs after being sent in to bat. Australia, chasing a revised target of 278 in 42.2 overs due to rain, reached 191 for 9 when play was halted by a thunderstorm, according to scorecards from ESPNcricinfo and other reports.

Mosaddek Hossain, returning to international cricket after nearly four years, was named player of the match for his unbeaten 86 off 70 balls and 2 for 37 with the ball. Fast bowler Nahid Rana claimed 4 for 41, including key wickets in the Australian top and middle order.

Bangladesh openers Saif Hassan and Tanzid Hasan gave the innings a brisk start before Najmul Hossain Shanto contributed 67. Mosaddek stabilized the middle order, adding crucial runs in partnerships after Bangladesh slipped to 140 for 4. Nathan Ellis took 3 for 38 for Australia, who dropped several catches in the field.

In the chase, Australia lost Matthew Short for a golden duck to Taskin Ahmed's first ball. Mustafizur Rahman trapped Marnus Labuschagne lbw soon after. Rana then struck with pace exceeding 150 kph at times, dismissing captain Josh Inglis and Alex Carey. Mosaddek removed Cooper Connolly and Matt Renshaw. Cameron Green top-scored with an unbeaten 52, but the required rate climbed as wickets fell regularly.

The result marked only Bangladesh's second ODI victory over Australia, ending a 21-year wait since their 2005 win in Cardiff. Australia fielded a depleted side missing several first-choice players, including captain Mitchell Marsh.

Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz said after the match: "We are very happy because of the way we batted. Shanto and Tanzid, the way they batted, I was really excited about that moment. As a captain, I'm really happy. We just need to keep going and keep the momentum."

The second ODI is scheduled for Thursday in Mirpur. Details on team selections and pitch conditions for the remaining matches were not immediately available.
