ATLANTA — World Cup debutants Cape Verde held Spain to a 0-0 draw in their opening Group H match on Monday, earning a point in one of the early surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Spain dominated possession and created the majority of the scoring opportunities but were unable to break through a disciplined Cape Verde defense.

The result marked Cape Verde’s first match in a FIFA World Cup and their first point at the tournament. Spain, among the pre-tournament favorites and reigning European champions, controlled much of the game but repeatedly found Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha in inspired form. Reuters reported that Spain had the bulk of possession and numerous attempts on goal, while Cape Verde relied largely on defensive organization and limited counterattacks.

Vozinha, 40, produced a series of saves to preserve the draw and was named player of the match, according to match reports. The goalkeeper’s performance frustrated Spain’s forwards throughout the contest and ensured Cape Verde emerged with a historic result.

“Progressing to the knockout rounds is a realistic goal,” Cape Verde midfielder Laros Duarte said after the match, according to Reuters, reflecting the confidence generated by the team’s opening performance.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente’s side introduced attacking options from the bench as the match wore on, but Cape Verde maintained its defensive shape. Reports said Spain struggled to convert chances despite sustained pressure, while Cape Verde nearly produced a late winner through one of its few attacking opportunities.

The draw leaves Group H finely balanced at the start of the tournament. Spain and Cape Verde are grouped with Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in the expanded 48-team World Cup being hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Under tournament rules, the top two teams in each group advance to the knockout stage, while several third-placed teams also qualify.
