NEW YORK — Celebrations linked to major sporting and political events drew large crowds across several cities over the weekend and into Monday, with authorities overseeing gatherings ranging from championship festivities to nationally significant public events.
In New York, preparations continued for a parade honoring the NBA champion New York Knicks after the team secured its first league title in more than five decades. City officials announced plans for a championship celebration in Manhattan, while fans gathered around Madison Square Garden and other locations following the victory. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city would host a parade later in the week.
The celebrations followed scenes of both jubilation and disorder in parts of Manhattan late Saturday. New York police said a teenager was injured in a shooting and several people were arrested after crowds filled streets near Times Square and Midtown. Authorities said investigations into those incidents were continuing on Monday.
Elsewhere, sports and politics intersected in Washington, where President Donald Trump hosted a mixed martial arts event on the White House South Lawn on Sunday as part of celebrations tied to the United States' 250th anniversary observances and his 80th birthday. The event, titled UFC Freedom 250, featured professional bouts attended by invited guests, military personnel and political supporters, according to Reuters.
“This is a one-off,” fighter Aiemann Zahabi told Reuters before the event. “It’s just one big celebration.”
The White House event also drew criticism from advocacy groups and political opponents who argued that it blurred the line between public office and entertainment. Organizers and UFC officials rejected suggestions that the event was intended as a political rally, saying it was part of broader anniversary celebrations.
Internationally, FIFA World Cup-related festivities continued in North America. In Mexico City, fans attended opening-week events connected to the tournament, while celebrations and public gatherings accompanied matches across host cities. Organizers said the events were designed to showcase local culture and welcome visiting supporters.
Officials in the United States, Mexico and Canada said security measures remained in place for major sporting events and related public gatherings. As of Monday, authorities reported that scheduled celebrations and commemorative events were continuing, while investigations into isolated incidents linked to large crowds remained ongoing.
