LONDON — Tom Holland said he sees his future in the Spider-Man franchise as including an eventual handover to a new generation of characters, describing a lengthy break between solo films as an opportunity to refresh the series rather than signal an imminent departure from the role.
Speaking in interviews released around the theatrical launch of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland said he would like to help introduce a successor before ending his tenure as Peter Parker, while stressing that no immediate exit was planned. His comments have renewed discussion about the long-term direction of one of Marvel and Sony Pictures' most commercially successful film franchises.
Holland, who first portrayed Spider-Man in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, told Empire magazine earlier this year that he hoped to remain involved long enough to "set up the next chapter," mentioning possibilities such as Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen or Spider-Woman as future directions for the franchise. He said he would be satisfied if he could mentor a successor in the way Robert Downey Jr. supported him during his early years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The actor has also addressed the multi-year gap between Spider-Man: No Way Home and Brand New Day, saying the pause allowed filmmakers to develop a new creative direction for the character. In promotional interviews, Holland described the latest installment as beginning a fresh chapter for Peter Parker following the events of No Way Home.
Despite speculation about whether Brand New Day could mark his final appearance as the web-slinger, Holland has avoided confirming plans beyond the current film. When asked in recent interviews about future Marvel projects, including upcoming Avengers films, he declined to discuss unannounced appearances, saying he could not answer such questions.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige also indicated that no immediate announcements about Holland's future were forthcoming. Following the film's record-setting opening, Feige said Holland and co-star Zendaya would first take what he called a "restful victory lap" after an extensive global promotional tour, while adding that there were "always plans" for Spider-Man.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, produced by Sony Pictures in association with Marvel Studios, opened in late July and has posted strong box office results, reinforcing Spider-Man's status as one of Hollywood's most enduring superhero franchises. Industry observers have noted that the film's performance comes amid a period of mixed commercial results for several other comic-book adaptations.
Neither Marvel Studios nor Sony Pictures has announced a release date or production schedule for a fifth solo Spider-Man film featuring Holland.
