ODENSE, Denmark — Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during an international friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, prompting the match to be abandoned.
Eriksen, 34, went down in the 65th minute at Nature Energy Park in Odense, appearing to clutch his chest before receiving immediate medical attention, according to multiple reports. The Norwegian referee Sigurd Smehus Kringstad halted play, and the game was officially called off in the 79th minute.
The Danish Football Association (DBU) said in a statement that Eriksen is conscious and "doing well under the circumstances." Team doctor Morten Boesen reported that the player regained consciousness quickly and that his implanted pacemaker appeared to function as expected.
Eriksen, who plays for Germany's VfL Wolfsburg, has a well-documented history of cardiac issues. He suffered a cardiac arrest during a European Championship match against Finland in June 2021, after which he received a defibrillator implant and made a successful return to professional football.
The friendly was a World Cup 2026 warm-up match. At the time of the incident, Denmark was leading 2-1. Both teams' players and staff reacted with visible concern, and Eriksen received an ovation from the crowd as he was escorted from the field.
"Christian Eriksen is conscious and feeling well according to the circumstances. The match has been called off," the DBU statement said.
No further details on the exact medical cause were immediately available, and officials said additional updates on Eriksen's condition would be provided later.
