LOS ANGELES — Christian Pulisic returned to action for the United States men's national team as it concluded its FIFA World Cup group-stage campaign, providing a boost ahead of the knockout rounds despite a 3-2 defeat to Turkey on Thursday. The United States had already secured first place in Group D before the match, allowing coach Mauricio Pochettino to manage the squad while welcoming back the captain from a calf injury, according to team officials and tournament reporting.
Pulisic entered the match in the second half after missing the Americans' previous group game against Australia because of the injury. The AC Milan midfielder quickly influenced the attack, creating chances and striking the post as the United States searched for an equalizer. His return came after several days of training with teammates following his recovery from the calf problem sustained earlier in the tournament.
The United States had already guaranteed progression to the Round of 32 by winning its opening two matches, enabling Pochettino to rotate several regular starters against Turkey. Defender Auston Trusty and midfielder Sebastian Berhalter scored for the Americans, while Turkey responded with three goals to claim victory in its final group match. The result did not alter the group's final standings, with the United States remaining atop Group D.
Speaking after the match, midfielder Weston McKennie highlighted Pulisic's influence following his return.
"He's a player that can create something out of nothing," McKennie said, according to Reuters. "When he's on the field, he gives us another dimension."
Pulisic had expressed optimism about his recovery before the match, telling reporters earlier in the week, "I'm feeling good, feeling positive, and hopefully I'll be able to play a part tomorrow." He said the injury resulted from a knock to his left calf during training before the tournament opener and was aggravated during the victory over Paraguay.
The United States will now turn its attention to the Round of 32, where it is scheduled to face Bosnia and Herzegovina. Team officials have not indicated any setback to Pulisic's recovery following his appearance against Turkey, and he is expected to continue preparations with the squad ahead of the knockout-stage fixture.
