The FBI reported 24 active shooter incidents in 2024, a decrease from prior years, but data from trackers indicate dozens of mass shooting events so far in 2026. Schools, workplaces and public venues have responded by expanding drills and emergency action plans.
The Department of Justice's Preparing for Active Shooter Situations program provides funding for multidisciplinary training of law enforcement, fire, EMS and other responders. Applications for fiscal year 2026 funding were open as of June, with a deadline in August.
"Staying informed, alert, and ready is a shared responsibility that strengthens the safety of the whole community," said Sgt. Atilla Vural of Hill Air Force Base in earlier guidance on preparedness.
Organizations like the ALICE Training Institute offer proactive response strategies beyond traditional lockdowns, emphasizing options to mitigate risks. CISA provides free resources, webinars and materials tailored for businesses, schools and communities.
Recent exercises include coordinated drills by transit agencies in preparation for major events such as the FIFA World Cup 2026. Hospitals and schools have incorporated active shooter protocols into broader emergency management plans.
Advocates stress the importance of prevention through threat assessment teams and mental health resources alongside response training. Officials note that active shooter situations often unfold rapidly, typically within minutes, underscoring the need for immediate community action before law enforcement arrives.
