EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Erling Haaland scored twice as Norway defeated Senegal 3-2 on Monday to secure a place in the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the Scandinavian nation’s first advancement beyond the group phase since its return to the tournament after a 28-year absence, according to FIFA match records and team officials.

Playing in rainy conditions at MetLife Stadium, Senegal started strongly and created early pressure, but Norway took the lead shortly before halftime when defender Marcus Pedersen scored in the 43rd minute. Haaland then struck twice in the second half, with both goals assisted by captain Martin Ødegaard, to put Norway firmly in control.

Senegal forward Ismaila Sarr scored once midway through the second half and added another goal in stoppage time, but the African side was unable to complete a comeback. The result left Norway with two victories from two Group I matches and guaranteed progression to the round of 32.

The victory continued a strong tournament for Haaland, who also scored twice in Norway’s opening 4-1 win over Iraq. The Manchester City striker now has four goals in the competition and is among the leading scorers at the World Cup.

“I don't know if we showed our true face but we played a better game than against Argentina,” Haaland said after the match, according to Reuters. “We conceded a goal but we had the mental resilience and we're gradually gaining strength, and this match will do us a lot of good.”

Norway coach Ståle Solbakken praised his team’s performance and highlighted Haaland’s contribution. Speaking to Norwegian broadcaster NRK after the match, Solbakken described the contest as “a fantastic football match” and said Norway’s progress reflected the team’s development since qualifying for the tournament.

The win sparked celebrations among Norwegian supporters, with players joining fans in the team’s well-known “Viking row” celebration after the final whistle. Team officials said the gesture has become a symbol of unity between the squad and supporters during the World Cup.

Earlier on Monday, France defeated Iraq 3-0 in the other Group I match, ensuring both France and Norway advanced to the knockout rounds. The two teams are level on points and will meet in their final group-stage fixture later this week to determine first place in the group. Senegal, meanwhile, remains in contention for advancement as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams, depending on results in the final round of matches.
